Can't bear to think about attending a networking meeting even though it could be a pivotal event in helping you grow in your career or find that next job? Try a few of these tips to make attending networking meetings a cinch:

1. Bring a buddy or coworker, depending on the type of organization it is. It's always safer in pairs.

2. Don't arrive too early. If networking lasts for 30 minutes, arrive only ten minutes early.

3. Find someone who is already sitting down and take a seat with them. Make small talk and eventually others will join you. Remember, most people are as nervous as you are.

4. Bring business cards even if you are job seeking. Exchange cards with everyone you meet and make sure you use them! Send note cards to each person you meet, telling them what a pleasure it was to meet them. Frequently this results with a phone call or at the very least, a friendly contact at the next meeting who will introduce you to others.

5. Get a membership list so that you can make contacts later. Even if all you do is mail letters to members asking for advice, you could still end up with assistance or leads.

6. Keep your eyes and your ears open for valuable job opportunities when others introduce themselves. Be certain to let people know what you are doing when you introduce yourself.

7. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!
