If you are familiar with the law of inertia, then you are aware that a body in motion tends to stay in motion. Likewise, a body at rest tends to stay at rest. Most job seekers tend to find themselves in a state of uneasy "rest", with almost a sense of helplessness in the job search process.

Does that sound like you, in motion sending out resumes, but not really getting anywhere? Falling into a rut and wondering how you are going to get out or when the phone is going to ring for an interview or job offer? If so, then we need to set your wheels in motion!

To truly channel your job search, you've got to be excited about the entrepreneurial position you have suddenly been thrust into. You alone have control of your destiny, what kind of job you will find and the pay and benefits you will negotiate. Your attitude is, therefore, of utmost importance.

To stay positive, form a support network, especially one of other job seekers. Join a job club such as Professional Placement Network or Women In Transition Job Seeker's Job.

Don't fumble in the dark. Establish a marketing plan for yourself. Micromanage that plan, setting up dates and times, down to the minute if necessary. Then, follow through.

Get out of the house. Do not hide behind the computer or the telephone doing busy work. Go to networking groups, research at the library, do walk-ins, have lunch with a previous colleague...talk to everyone.

If you feel lost, exasperated or down, reach out for help. There are many resources available from books to career counselors.

Polish your skills. Nothing boosts positive self-image like a new skill. Make new contacts while increasing your potential worth by taking a relevant course.

Treat yourself kindly and take care of yourself. Find simple and inexpensive rewards for your hard work like a walk on the beach or a relaxing soak in the tub. If you are working hard, you will need it!
